A very special "special" weapon, the B61 remained unpainted because it was designed to be carried externally by fighter aircraft which would fly at more than twice the speed of sound. Polished with floor wax, this was considered by many to be perhaps the "prettiest" nuclear weapon! Taken at the USAF Museum, this photograph shows a display unit presented in such a sloppy condition that if my crew had maintained real units so poorly we would have been in very serious SHTF trouble! Note: the "mod 11" variant of the B61 is currently a point of great controversy involving the various "non-proliferation" treaties to which the "nuclear club" nations are supposedly in agreement.

The picture below is of a B38B training unit which has been restored according to TO specifications and displayed as a WR  B61 (War Reserve) unit.  Note the tightly packed parachute.  (P.S. It’s for sale, asking price $15,000).
